I'm coming to the conclusion that there are a few different types of people who play online.
Some of them like to get involved in a plot. Others just like to get online, play their characters, and that's that. Of course, it can get difficult when you're one of these types, and the person or people you're playing with is another...like when I was trying to form a pack on a chat-based game I played in, and this one person I was trying to form a Garou pack with IC just wanted to play her character -- hadn't even introduced herself to the elders of the caern.
I seem to have run into a couple people like this in the game I currently run. It's OK, I guess, but sometimes I really want to advance my plot, and they seem to just be interested in chatting. I need to find some sort of a happy medium, because I don't want to frustrate the players who just want to chat, but then again I don't want to end up frustrated because no one is paying attention to what's going on outside the little circle of PCs.
This is probably making little to no sense, but that's what you get on little to no sleep. Stupid nightmares.
