It's probably a good idea to talk character background first, and then have a player make up the character sheet. That way, I don't get backgrounds that don't match the character sheets, and thus save myself headaches.
So, when talking to the next new player, remember to ask, "What kind of a character do you want to play? Serious, funny, gregarious, quiet, what?" Maybe it'll help avoid the recent headache I had. Here's hoping!
