Why do some people feel compelled to inflict as much suffering as possible on their PCs in the background stories? Is it an attempt to gain sympathy from other people, or have the players just watched too many soap operas?
Seriously, though, I generally get at least *one* character in every game who's had so many bad things happen to him or her that s/he ought to be a major basket case. And this is *before* the game even starts! :-)
Maybe it's the WoD influence -- though it seems to have spread to other games I've run. Of course, Buffalo is a heavily WoD-based town, so maybe the WoD zeitgeist rubs off on other games people play...
